California’s Senate Bill 253 (SB 253), known as the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, mandates comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) disclosure for large companies. Failure to comply can result in annual penalties of up to $500,000.
ECG provides a turn-key solution that helps your company seamlessly comply with SB 253, delivering accurate, verified, and credible emissions reporting.
What is California's SB 253?
SB 253 requires U.S. companies with over $1 billion in annual revenue that do business in California to publicly disclose their entire GHG emissions inventory. This landmark legislation aims to increase corporate transparency and accountability for climate impacts.
Key Compliance Requirements
Full Scope Reporting: Companies must report their global Scope 1 and 2 emissions starting in 2026, followed by Scope 3 emissions in 2027.
Standardized Methodology: All emissions data must be calculated in line with the GHG Protocol standards, the world’s most widely used accounting tool.
Independent Assurance: Disclosures require third-party assurance, starting at a limited level and increasing to a reasonable assurance level over time.
Public Disclosure: Reports must be filed annually with a digital reporting platform managed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
